Mary Edna Cargill Scholarship
"I WANT TO TAKE A MINUTE TO THANK THE BETHEL VISITING NURSE ORGANIZATION-AND ESPECIALLY THE PHYSICAL THERAPY DEPARTMENT FOR THE EXCELLENT REHABILITATION THAT I HAVE EXPERIENCED OVER THE PAST 2 WEEKS SINCE MY TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT. THE THERAPISTS FIRM, YET GENTLE, THERAPY HAS HELPED ME GET THROUGH A SENSITIVE PERIOD OF ADJUSTMENT. I AM LUCKY TO HAVE HAD HER PROFESSIONAL HELP AND I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HER AS A FRIEND. IF ANYONE I KNOW EVER NEEDS TRANSITIONAL HEALTH CARE, I WILL RECOMMEND THAT THE BETHEL VISITING NURSES SHOULD BE ONE OF THEIR CHOICES. THANK YOU AGAIN."
The Bethel Visiting Nurse Association was founded in 1927 by a group of public-spirited women who met regularly at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Bethel. Our VNA began with one nurse, Sara Baldwin, who served as both a home care nurse and school nurse for the Town of Bethel.
A voluntary board of directors has guided the Bethel VNA through decades of growth and change. Our roots in the communities we serve are strengthened through the contributions of these community leaders, local health care experts and dedicated area residents.
Since 1968, the Mary Edna Cargill Scholarship has been awarded each year to Bethel residents who are enrolled in or accepted to a degree program in a health-related field. Special consideration is given to those pursuing a degree in Nursing, Speech Therapy, Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy, however, any other health-related field also qualifies. This scholarship memorializes Mary Edna Cargill, a Bethel VNA nurse who was both a school and home care nurse. Her descendants still live in Bethel.
